VILLA JARAGUA, Bahoruco. –The government, through the Presidential Commission for Support to Provincial Development, broke ground on the renovation work of the Xaragua Club premises in this municipality.

The event was attended by Deputy Olfanny Méndez, Senator Guillermo Lama of Bahoruco, Governor María Esther Díaz Medina, the mayors of Villa Jaragua, Ivan Arístides Medina Trinidad, of Neiba, Yadel Subervi, and of Los Rios, Martha Cuevas, as well as the district directors of Galván and Las Clavellinas, Enny Florentino and Jhondary Rivas, the members of the Xaragua Club monitoring committee, among others.

The main speeches of the event were given by Mr. Simon Candelario, administrative director of the Presidential Commission for Support to Provincial Development, who represented the president of the entity, Angel de la Cruz,

The welcoming remarks were delivered by Governor María Esther Díaz Medina, who said that more than just words of welcome, she wanted to express her gratitude to President Luis Abinader Corona and its president, Angel de la Cruz, for listening to the voice of the Xaragua Club’s board of directors, who, she said, had been pursuing this project since 2022, «and today, thank God, it has become a reality,» said Díaz Medina.

The Mayor of the municipality of Villa Jaragua, Ivan Arístides Medina Trinidad, also addressed those present with motivating words, saying that it is a source of pride to see this project come to fruition and took the opportunity to congratulate the board of directors of the Xaragua Club for their persistence in making the work happen.

He recalled that when the President of the Republic visited the province of Bahoruco to break ground on the construction of the UASD Neiba campus, a commission from the board of directors of the Xaragua Club approached the President, «attentive to them,» and presented him with the project for the renovation of the premises. He also expressed his gratitude to Representative Olfanny Méndez, who, as soon as the commission delivered the project to her, followed up on it constantly so that today that first groundbreaking ceremony could become a reality.

“At that time, we are talking about 2022, the current governor (María Esther) was not governor, nor was Guillermito a Senator, and when they reached those positions they also joined in supporting that project so that it is now a reality,” said the mayor of Villa Jaragua.

In addition to the Xaragua Club’s Board of Directors, the oversight committee of said entity and community leaders were present, who positively assessed the government’s intervention in renovating such an emblematic space, which they described as vitally important for promoting culture, art, and healthy recreation in the municipality.

The construction of the project will be carried out by the construction company, Monbar Ingeniería, whose representative, Carlos Montan, said that the project would be delivered in less than a year, according to the projection and if conditions allow.

The activity was blessed by the parish priest Edson Gastón, of the San José Obrero parish, who highlighted the importance of the adaptation of the main social and cultural recreation space that the municipality has, according to representatives of the board that is in charge of managing the aforementioned club.

History of the Xaragua Club

Motivated by a progressive and cultural vision of the fertile minds of a group of young people from this community, they decided to found a society that would guarantee Jaragua the unity of its inhabitants to face the problems that existed at that time, and that is how the “Agricultural Club” emerged on August 22, 1948, on 27 de Febrero Street Number 78.

This entity is created with legal personality and non-profit status in accordance with Law 520 of July 26, 1920 and its modifications regarding organizations that do not have a pecuniary objective.

After a laborious activity in the community, it was decided in the 1960s to change the name of «Club Agrícola» to «Sociedad Recreativa y Cultural Xaragua Club», a name that remains to this day.

The Xaragua Club Recreational and Cultural Society is known in our community as the mother or leader of all other organizations existing in the Municipality.
